Description

Time Machine by Olivia Artz Modular — A Granular Journey Through Time

Time Machine is a granular delay that treats time as a malleable substance. Eight faders sit on the panel, each controlling an independent delay line. Add a fader for the dry signal — and that’s where familiar territory ends and the time‑travel begins. Digital feedback has rarely sounded this intriguing.

At the heart of this time‑bending device is a high‑resolution DSP engine by Eris Fairbanks, built on 15 years of experience in granular programming. The central time control follows an exponential curve, giving you precise command over very short delays while still allowing for extreme time stretching. A single knob sweeps from nearly zero to 8 seconds, but add some CV and watch it expand to an impressive 2.5 minutes.

The Spread parameter reveals the unique character of the Time Machine. In the center position, the eight delay streams are evenly distributed across time. Turn it left and they cluster closer to the present moment. Turn it right and they drift toward maximum delay time, like digital echoes sliding into the future. Feed it a clock signal and the streams sync to tempo — but adjust Spread and they wander off the beat, with only the last tap remaining locked to the clock.

From rhythmic patterns to reverberant spaces, from granular textures to feedback experiments — the Time Machine shapes its delays with precision. It feels equally at home in ultra‑tight Karplus‑Strong territory and in long, evolving soundscapes that seem to stretch into infinity. It’s a fascinating delay journey worth experiencing.
